A leather sofa is affordable. Beginning models are similarly priced to upholstered couches and go up from there, but they tend to last much longer. Depending on how you look at it, it could be argued that a leather sofa is actually less expensive over time than other options. You can find a basic leather love seat for under a thousand dollars. Of course, you can spend much more. A large sectional that includes love seat, sofa, and maybe a recliner or two can be thousands. From my experiences selling furniture I can say that the idea of a leather sofa is something many people are attached to, but tend to think of as too expensive. Most are pleasantly surprised when they learn the real benefit and value of leather.
More Comfortable Than Upholstery: Upholstery provides a thin barrier between those using the furniture and the structure of the cushion. Over time, the shape of the couch will change and the materials will break down. This leads to an uncomfortable, lumpy couch that no one wants to sit on. As leather sofas age, the material becomes more comfortable. Rather than breaking down, these sofas conform to body weight more readily. In fact, many owners note that their older couch feels nicer than it did when it was brand new.
The first thing about a leather sofa that sets it above and apart from other types of sofas is its inherent durability. Leather itself is just plain tough. Whether it's cow hide, alligator, shark, or some other exotic hide, the resulting leather is simply going to last for years and years. It takes a real beating and just gets more charming as a result. The natural texture and coloration of leather lends itself to longevity because it doesn't show normal use as a defect. Rather, any occasional sign of wear just adds to the charm. This is a generalized statement and, of course, there are exceptions. Some leather is very smooth and will show blemishes. A leather sofa isn't immune to wear and tear, but it does excel what other fabric options will do.
Cushions and Style Decisions: If your couch has an attached back, your options for restyling will be a bit more limited. Still, you can make a big difference with new fabric covering for the upholstery and a change of style for the seating cushions. It can be as simple as choosing slipcovers for the couch and cushions in a livelier, updated style, or - if you're daring - you can go as far as cutting away the attached pillow back and replacing it with cushions.
The fabric of the sofa also plays a very important role in its selection. You have to decide whether your sofa will be used for formal occasions or will be used very regularly. Leather recliners can be great but may pinch your pockets slightly harder. If you have kids, the sofa will get some roughing up frequently. Children tend to drop food, juices and other junk on the sofa. The sofa, in such cases must be very simple and practical. It may have busy prints to hide the stains and dark colors to keep people from noticing the little \"accidents\", as the best detergents and dry cleaners may not be able to remove them completely.
